2014 Apr 15

AMERICUS, Ga. (April 15, 2014)--Formerly known as SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise), the Georgia Southwestern State University Enactus team continued its legacy of service, entrepreneurship and success at the national competition earlier this month in Cincinnati.

Alyssa White of Doraville,GA, was one of five students to participate in GSW's Enactus presentation team. White's presentation team qualified for the quarterfinal round (top 130) out of 300 teams from colleges across the country. Each year, the Enactus team and its members put in hundreds of service hours within the local community and report on their impact through presentation at the national competition.

Enactus is a global non-profit organization that brings together student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. Active in more than 40 countries, Enactus establishes student teams on university campuses and the effectiveness of their programs is judged at competition.

GSW Enactus' focus in 2014 was stamping out hunger and investing in the youth of the community. The team raised enough money to provide 20,000 food items for the Harvest of Hope Food Pantry in Americus. They also created a website for the organization and developed a marketing plan. Much of their time this semester also was spent piloting a youth fitness plan at Southland Academy called "Fun and Fit," and they have plans to implement it at other local schools in the future.

Georgia Southwestern Enactus has 50 members and is led by their president BarbaraAnn Barbre of Albany, Ga. and faculty advisors Robert Bennett, Ph.D., and Gaynor Cheokas, D.B.A., from the School of Business Administration. Enactus membership is open to students from all majors. Call (229) 931-2090 for additional information.
