Kelly Dekle selected 2015 GSW Outstanding Scholar

2015 May 6

Kelly Dekle of Donalsonville, Ga. was recognized Friday, May 1 with Georgia Southwestern State University's (GSW) highest academic honor. During the Graduation and Honors Convocation, Dekle, a math with teacher certification major, was named GSW's 2015 Outstanding Scholar.

The annual recipient of this award represents Georgia Southwestern during the University System of Georgia's (USG) annual Academic Recognition Day in the Georgia General Assembly. Dekle was one of only 30 students in the USG honored on that day. She received a letter from Chancellor Hank Huckaby congratulating her and a proclamation from the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate.

Dekle, according to her instructors, was very deserving for this great honor.

"Kelly was one of the most outstanding students throughout my classes," said Kailash Ghimire, Ph.D., Dekle's academic advisor. "The classes she took from me, modern geometry and mathematical statistics are normally considered challenging. But, Kelly was able not only to understand the materials, she was able to maintain A's in these courses.

"She has a thirst and dedication for learning, which can be seen from her academic transcripts," Ghimire added.

The Outstanding Scholar Award represents superb scholastic achievement. To be considered for this award, the student must have a near-perfect grade point average (GPA). Dekle's GPA is an impressive 3.97.

Throughout her time at GSW, Dekle has remained active, as she has volunteered during the high school and junior high math tournaments every year. She will graduate in Spring 2016.
